A lucky cloud composed of golden silk knots — the auspicious cloud (祥云) of Chinese art, made in the pankou technique from the knotted buttons of the qipao and raised into an openwork brooch.

The scrolling cloud is the oldest good-luck sign in China — fortune arriving, wishes granted — and it is the same ruyi cloud that carries the Shakespeare emblem on our silk scarf. Every curl is a silk cord shaped by hand and couched in gold thread.

It belongs on a book-lover’s coat: a literary gift for an English teacher, a graduate, a theatre companion — or simply the finishing gold on a winter lapel.
