Silk shading lives or dies on the thread. These four shades are graded from light to dark, so you can blend a petal or a leaf without hunting for the in-between colour.

It is the thread our students ask for after a workshop: glossy, fine and soft enough to lay smooth long-and-short stitches. It comes twisted, and splits into finer strands when you want a finer line.

Why you’ll love it

  • Four graded shades in one set, ready for shading
  • 100% mulberry silk with a natural sheen
  • Eight colourways, each named for a garden loved in both Suzhou and Britain (see below)
  • Made for silk shading, needle painting and thread painting

Details

  • 1 set = 4 skeins, one of each shade
  • Fibre: 100% mulberry silk
  • Total length: approx. 320 m (about 80 m per skein); card about 9 × 23 cm
  • Supplied twisted (unsplit); split it into finer strands for shading
  • Colours may vary slightly from screen to screen and between dye lots
  • Dispatched from London in 3–5 business days

The colourways

  • Willow Bud: lime to leaf green, the first willow shoots of spring
  • Pine Mist: silver sage to deep teal, pines on a misty hill
  • Peach Bloom: blush to soft rose, peach blossom in full flower
  • Plum Wine: shell pink through coral to deep burgundy
  • Wisteria Rain: pale lavender to violet, wisteria falling like rain
  • Porcelain Sky: pale sky to cobalt, the blues of blue-and-white porcelain
  • Osmanthus Moon: ivory to deep gold, osmanthus under the mid-autumn moon
  • Suzhou Garden: leaf green, ivory, pink and lilac, a garden in one set
