“There’s magic in the web of it.” — Othello, Act 3, Scene 4

A line of Shakespeare, sewn in silk. Othello’s weaver’s word for enchantment is hand-embroidered in gold thread on a navy pure-silk scarf/pocket square, in a technique refined over two thousand years. Look twice at the gold cloud and a portrait of Shakespeare appears inside it.

The design draws on an image from the British Library’s collection, used under licence from the Library. The scarf is designed and made by Royal Chou and is also stocked by the British Library shop at St Pancras.

The line

In Othello the handkerchief is the play’s turning point, and “web” is the woven cloth itself — Shakespeare writing about cloth and enchantment in the same breath. Four hundred years on, you can wear both.

The stitch

Silk shading — “painting with the needle” — worked in the Su embroidery tradition of Suzhou, inscribed in China’s national intangible cultural heritage. Each strand of silk is split by hand into finer filaments to blend colour like brushstrokes. More than twenty craft processes go into each scarf, and every roundel is embroidered by hand, so no two are quite the same.
