This is the piece that does. A spray of ivory silk Four Season Orchids on a long stick pin — in the hair, on a lapel, on a hat band — that reads as real dried orchids, goes with almost any colour of dress (navy, sage, blush, cream, black), and will not have wilted by the speeches. Small — 5 × 9 cm, 2 × 3½ in — light, and unlike anything else in the room, so expect to be asked where it came from. Photos 2–4 show it worn.

It is ronghua: silk floss wound onto fine wire and shaped petal by petal, a Chinese heritage craft once made for court dress. Not embroidered, not fabric-cut — shaped by hand, so no two sprays are quite the same.
